When Do You Want To Go?
South Georgia is a British Overseas Territory and is one of the top places to visit on an Antarctic cruise. St Andrew’s bay on the east coast of the island is home to a colony of more than 300,000 king penguins, this spectacle is a must-see for the wildlife enthusiast. The island is also home to a large number of elephant and fur seals. Up until the 1960s, the island was a hub of whaling activity, it was here that Sir Ernest Shackleton finally returned to civilisation and was able to summon help for his stranded men. You will be able to visit the grave of this polar legend at Grytviken. The decline in whaling has allowed the wildlife here to recover, turning the area into a sanctuary for wildlife in the South Atlantic.
Our cruises to South Georgia will more often than not also visit the Antarctica peninsula, though more in-depth voyages around the island are possible, South Georgia is also regularly combined with the Falkland Islands. Some of the longest voyages will also attempt to cross the Antarctic circle.
